This lesson is based on the following YouTube video:
The present continuous is used to talk about something that is unfinished or incomplete AND that is happening now.
I am going to the supermarket.
I am typing the report.
The present continuous is made of two parts.
1. The present tense of the verb “To be” +
2. The present participle of the main verb.
This is how we make the present continuous.
Subject | + to be | + base + ing |
Max | is | talking on the phone. |
Subject | + to be + not | + base + ing |
Max | is not (isn’t) | talking in the phone. |
To be | + subject | + base + ing |
Is | Max | talking on the phone |
Let’s look at some more examples.
We use the present continuous to talk about something that is happening now:
She is studying.
They are talking.
We use it to talk about something (an action) that is going on for a continuous period of time.
Is he still working at the same restaurant?
Are they still dating?
To talk about something that is always happening. Something that is repetitive.
They are always arguing about the music.
She’s usually practicing the guitar.

Are they coming to the party?
What are you doing now?
I’m …
What are they doing tonight?
They’re …
What is Mary doing?
She’s …
