ESL Conversation – Reporting a Traffic Accident

Police Officer: Can I see your license and registration?

Samantha: Yes, of course. Here you are.

Police Officer: Thank you ma’am. How much damage is there to your car?

Samantha: Just look at it. It’s a write off. There’s no way I will be able to fix it.

Police Officer: What happened?

Samantha: Well, the light turned green, so I started to drive.

Police Officer: And then what happened?

Samantha: And then he ran the red light and started driving on the wrong side of the road.

Police Officer: Was he speeding?

Samantha: Absolutely!

Police Officer: And how fast were you driving?

Samantha: I was driving the speed limit of course.

Police Officer: Do you know what the speed limit is here?

Samantha: It’s seventy kilometers per hour.

Police Officer: No, it isn’t. This is a school crossing, and the speed limit is thirty kilometers per hour. That means you were driving forty kilometers over the speed limit.

Samantha: Oh, my goodness. I had no idea. My husband is going to kill me.
