ESL Past Simple Irregular Rules
In today’s lesson, I will explain the past simple. We will learn about the irregular past simple
Irregular verbs are verbs that don’t end in -d, -ed or -ied spellings of the past simple.
Many of the most frequently used verbs are irregular.
Let’s review a few things about the past simple.
The past simple is used to talk about the past:
The past simple tense is used to talk about a completed action in a time before now.
The time of the action can be the recent past or the distant past.
It doesn’t matter how long that action lasted, just that it’s completed.
You use the simple past to talk about when something happened.
It’s linked with some past time expressions.
#1 – We use it to talk about things using frequency
I always drank coffee.
I sometimes hid from my parents.
I rarely beat her in Tennis.
#2 – A definite point in time
I met him last week.
She bought a new dress yesterday.
I slept a lot when I was a student.
#3 – An indefinite point in time
Billy drew this picture a long time ago.
He felt sick the other day.
How do you form the past simple for irregular verbs?
For the negative and interrogative, we follow the same rules as the regular past simple.
Please review the past simple video.
Unfortunately, there are no rules.
There are no shortcuts (sound really disappointed)
You really just have to memorize them.
BUT…!!
The following are 10 of the most commonly used irregular verbs in English.
I hope these will help you a little bit.
be – was
have – had
do – did
say – said
make – made
go – went
take – took
come – came
see – saw
get – got
That’s all for this lesson. Good luck memorizing past irregular verbs!
